Feather’s Edge is a fast-paced, tough-as-talons adventure about becoming the ultimate swordmaster. Play as Upu, an anthropomorphic hoopoe bird warrior, on their quest to save the collapsing Tower of Time. Explore an interconnected handcrafted world in a fast-paced blend of kinetic action and quick tactical thinking. Master the blade by dashing and slashing through foes and enter a satisfying combat flow-state. Simply staying alive won’t be enough – closing the rifts in time plaguing the tower will require perfection, and the dedication to achieve it.
Like most of our games, Feather’s Edge started out as a jam game. The original idea was developed at a team offsite during Jam-uary 2024. We established the first version of the integrated combat and movement mechanic, the dash and slash, which remains central to Feather’s Edge today.
The idea showed promise and we were encouraged to keep working on it by the folks we showed it to at the monthly meetups of our wonderful South African game dev communities. At the time, we were working with our friends at Free Lives on their amazing game Terra Nil, but we found time here and there to keep working on the prototype. We released the first public build on itch.io in late December 2024 under the name Upupa Bird Ninja, a call-out to the latin name of our Hoopoe protagonist.
Around that same time, we heard back from the fine folks at Outersloth. After a few meetings and talking about our plans for the game as well their vision for Outersloth, we accepted their funding offer in March 2025.
With the game greenlit, we switched into full production mode. We grew the team up to the nine wonderful humans working on the game today. 2025 ended with us showing an alpha of the full game at the Playtopia games festival in Cape Town.
In early 2026 we renamed the game to Feather’s Edge. With the game’s identity securely established, and the full team excitedly working on it, the stage is set to finally bring it into the spotlight in 2026.
